#FinallyFriday {4}: End of Days

Finally Friday is a meme started by me (Jessica, aka @coffeelvnmom) and J from @life_love_fandomsThis week's I-finally-read-this-waiting-on-Wednesday-book is: End of Days.
End of Days (Penryn and the End of Days, #3)

So... I enjoyed End of Days, but it was not my favorite out of the three. Without spoiling anything for anyone, I just didn't get enough of Raffe and Penryn. Were they together a lot? Yes. But was there much romance? Not enough for me! (Also, one part explained a bit *too* much for me... Anyone else who read it feel the same way? Hehehe)

As an author, I understand how hard it is to bring so many plot things together (and I've yet to even complete a series, so I know it's not easy). The hype in the first two books I think had to be pushed aside for the grand finale, and that made me sad, because yep, I'll admit it, I was in it for the romance. So while it was good, again, and did have action and such, it just wasn't my favorite. I've seen lots of readers say they loved it, though, and if you've read the first two (or even if you haven't yet), I'd still suggest checking out the entire series!

Starflight (Starflight, #1)

Starflight

by Melissa Landers

Publication date: February 2, 2016

From Goodreads:

Life in the outer realm is a lawless, dirty, hard existence, and Solara Brooks is hungry for it. Just out of the orphanage, she needs a fresh start in a place where nobody cares about the engine grease beneath her fingernails or the felony tattoos across her knuckles. She's so desperate to reach the realm that she's willing to indenture herself to Doran Spaulding, the rich and popular quarterback who made her life miserable all through high school, in exchange for passage aboard the spaceliner Zenith.

When a twist of fate lands them instead on the Banshee, a vessel of dubious repute, Doran learns he's been framed on Earth for conspiracy. As he pursues a set of mysterious coordinates rumored to hold the key to clearing his name, he and Solara must get past their enmity to work together and evade those out for their arrest. Life on the Banshee may be tumultuous, but as Solara and Doran are forced to question everything they once believed about their world--and each other--the ship becomes home, and the eccentric crew family. But what Solara and Doran discover on the mysterious Planet X has the power to not only alter their lives, but the existence of everyone in the universe...

Waiting on Wednesday {89}: The Hired Girl

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine. This week's can't-wait-to-read pre-publication book is: The Hired Girl.

The Hired Girl

The Hired Girl

by Laura Amy Schlitz

Publication date: September 9th, 2015

From Goodreads:

Newbery Medalist Laura Amy Schlitz brings her delicious wit and keen eye to early twentieth-century America in a moving yet comedic tour de force.

Fourteen-year-old Joan Skraggs, just like the heroines in her beloved novels, yearns for real life and true love. But what hope is there for adventure, beauty, or art on a hardscrabble farm in Pennsylvania where the work never ends? Over the summer of 1911, Joan pours her heart out into her diary as she seeks a new, better life for herself—because maybe, just maybe, a hired girl cleaning and cooking for six dollars a week can become what a farm girl could only dream of—a woman with a future. Inspired by her own grandmother’s journal, Newbery Medalist Laura Amy Schlitz relates Joan’s journey from the muck of the chicken coop to the comforts of a society household in Baltimore (Electricity! Carpet sweepers! Sending out the laundry!), taking readers on an exploration of feminism and housework; religion and literature; love and loyalty; cats, hats, and bunions.

An Ember in the Ashes (An Ember in the Ashes, #1) by Sabaa Tahir (narrated by Fiona Hardingham & Steve West):

Laia is a slave.

Elias is a soldier.

Neither is free.

Under the Martial Empire, defiance is met with death. Those who do not vow their blood and bodies to the Emperor risk the execution of their loved ones and the destruction of all they hold dear.

It is in this brutal world, inspired by ancient Rome, that Laia lives with her grandparents and older brother. The family ekes out an existence in the Empire’s impoverished backstreets. They do not challenge the Empire. They’ve seen what happens to those who do.

But when Laia’s brother is arrested for treason, Laia is forced to make a decision. In exchange for help from rebels who promise to rescue her brother, she will risk her life to spy for them from within the Empire’s greatest military academy.

There, Laia meets Elias, the school’s finest soldier—and secretly, its most unwilling. Elias wants only to be free of the tyranny he’s being trained to enforce. He and Laia will soon realize that their destinies are intertwined—and that their choices will change the fate of the Empire itself.

The Moon Dwellers (The Dwellers Saga, #1) by David Estes (narrated by Julia Whelon & Will Damron):

In a desperate attempt to escape destruction decades earlier, humankind was forced underground, into the depths of the earth, creating a new society called the Tri-Realms.

After her parents and sister are abducted by the Enforcers, seventeen-year-old Adele, a member of the middle-class moon dwellers, is unjustly sentenced to life in prison for her parents' crimes of treason.

Against all odds, Adele must escape from the Pen and find her family, while being hunted by a deranged, killing machine named Rivet, who works for the President. She is helped by two other inmates, Tawni and Cole, each of whom have dark secrets that are better left undiscovered. Other than her friends, the only thing she has going for her is a wicked roundhouse kick and two fists that have been well-trained for combat by her father.

At the other end of the social spectrum is Tristan, the son of the President and a sun dweller. His mother is gone. He hates his father. Backed by only his servant and best friend, Roc, he leaves his lavish lifestyle in the Sun Realm, seeking to make something good out of his troubled life.

When a war breaks out within the Tri-Realms, Tristan is thrust into the middle of a conflict that seems to mysteriously follow Adele as she seeks to find her family and uncover her parents true past.

In their world, someone must die.

Stupid Fast (Stupid Fast, #1) by Geoff Herbach (narrated by Fred Berman)

I, Felton Reinstein, am Stupid Fast. Seriously. The upper classmen used to call me Squirrel Nut, because I was little and jumpy. Then, during sophomore year, I got tall and huge and so fast the gym teachers in their tight shorts fell all over themselves. During summer, three things happened all at once. First, the pee-smelling jocks in my grade got me to work out for football, even though I had no intention of playing. Second, on my paper route the most beautiful girl I have ever seen moved in and played piano at 6 a.m. Third, my mom, who never drinks, had some wine, slept in her car, stopped weeding the garden, then took my TV and put it in her room and decided she wouldn’t get out of bed.

Listen, I have not had much success in my life. But suddenly I’m riding around in a jock’s pick-up truck? Suddenly I’m invited to go on walks with beautiful girls? So, it’s understandable that when my little brother stopped playing piano and began to dress like a pirate I didn’t pay much attention. That I didn’t want to deal with my mom coming apart.

Please note that some of these books are definitely upper YA due to language/underage drinking/sexual references.

Waiting on Wednesday {88}: The Boy Most Likely To

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine. This week's can't-wait-to-read pre-publication book is: The Boy Most Likely To.

The Boy Most Likely To

The Boy Most Likely To

by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Publication date: August 18th, 2015

From Goodreads:

Surprises abound and sparks ignite in the highly anticipated, utterly romantic companion to My Life Next Door

Tim Mason was The Boy Most Likely To: - find the liquor cabinet blindfolded - need a liver transplant - drive his car into a house

Alice Garrett was The Girl Most Likely To: - well, not date her little brother’s baggage-burdened best friend, for starters.

For Tim, it wouldn’t be smart to fall for Alice. For Alice, nothing could be scarier than falling for Tim. But Tim has never been known for making the smart choice, and Alice is starting to wonder if the “smart” choice is always the right one. When these two crash into each other, they crash hard.

Then the unexpected consequences of Tim’s wild days come back to shock him. He finds himself in a situation that isn’t all it appears to be, that he never could have predicted . . . but maybe should have.

And Alice is caught in the middle.

Told in Tim’s and Alice’s distinctive, disarming, entirely compelling voices, this return to the world of My Life Next Door is a story about failing first, trying again, and having to decide whether to risk it all once more.

June's Reader Interview: Becky G. (@Becky_LoveDemi )

Welcome back to a monthly meme here at Let Me Tell You A Story: Reader Interview! This month Becky is here to tell us about her faves! :)

Hey, Becky, thanks so much for being here! :D

Hello Jessica! I'm so happy to be doing this, this is my first interview ever and I'm so happy that it's about books!! So let's do this.

How long have you been reading YA?

Since 5 years ago, the first YA book that I read was Firelight by Sophie Jordan, I LOVED that book, it was amazing and when I finished it I started to buy lots and lots of books.

Are the majority of your YA reader friends local, or online?

Some of my friends love to read YA, I never stopped talking about my love for YA books and I always recommend them to read some of my favorites, but yes I think the majority are online, they are amazing and I love to talk about books and writers with them.

How do you feel about chapter titles? (Yes? No? A bit of both? Why?)

I think they are ok, I love chapter titles because they kind of give you a sneak peak of the chapter, and I like to know what will happen next without a major spoiler.

If you could make one book cover into a poster to hang on your wall, which book would it be?

Fallen by Lauren Kate of course! I love those books, and the cover is dark and amazing.

Favorite book quote?

“Libraries were full of ideas–perhaps the most
dangerous and powerful of all weapons.”

― Sarah J. Maas, Throne of Glass

Do you have a favorite indie read?

I haven't read an indie book, but I would love to read one.

Name the last book you breezed through because you were so sucked in, and tell us what made it so intriguing.

The Sin Eaters Daughter, it was amazing, I love it because it has mystery, love and plot twists, it was very original, I couldn't stop reading it and I can't wait to read the next book.

Favorite secondary character?

Marlee from The Selection.

Has there been a book you weren't sure you'd like, but were pleasantly surprised by?

Yes! I thought I wouldn't like The Selection but now I love the books, every single one of them. The Heir was amazing, and I can't wait to know what happens next.

Do you find that you tend to gravitate toward one type of cover design? If so, what's your favorite style?

Yeah, I love the covers in which the models are wearing dresses, they are so beautiful and stunning, and I always wonder what the story is about, and I usually end up loving them.

What character would you hate to be stranded with on a deserted island?

Bellatrix Lestrange for sure.

Go to page 42 of your current read and tell us the 5th sentence (unless it's spoilery, of course) :D

When I am sure he is out of earshot I turn to my oldest companion. "He's not Lormerian," I say in a low voice.
(Quote from The Sin Eater's Daughter.)

What's the first thing you read when you get a book in your hands?

I always read the dedication first and then the acknowledgements. The book with my favorite dedication ever is The Orphan Queen by Jodi Meadows.

Last month Von listed quite a few favorite male and female MCs. Who are yours, and what makes them so special?

Eleanor from Something Strange and Deadly
Tris from Divergent.
Cècile from Stolen Songbird.
Meira from Snow Like Ashes.
Luce from Fallen.
Mare from Red Queen.
Daniel from Fallen.
Harry Potter.

They are some of my favorite characters because they are brave, they never give up and they fight for what they believe.

Strangest thing you've used as a bookmark.

A flower.

That had to be a lovely bookmark! :)

Well thanks so much for hanging out with us here at Let Me Tell You A Story, Becky! :D Happy reading!

Meet Becky: Hey guys I'm Becky! Reading and writing is what I love to do, I'm super fan of Harry Potter and Friends. I'm also into fashion. For me it's really important to have a healthy lifestyle but I love pizza so... Yeah. My favorite writers are Lauren Kate, Susan Dennard, Jodi Meadows and more.
